The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), the registry of the Canadian ccTLD .CA, reported that 54,129 domain names were registered in the domain zone during May. This is the absolute record for the entire existence of CIRA, which has been managing .CA since 1998. For comparison, the number of new registrations in .CA was 38 percent lower last May.
.CA was delegated in 1987, and to date, it has a little over 3 million registrations, according to Domain Name Stat. May’s surge is primarily attributed to the coronavirus pandemic and quarantine restrictions that pushed businesses to rapidly shift online. Domain Name Wire recalled that other companies and organizations related to the domain business and internet activity also reported record successes. For example, a large domain registrar, Tucows, reported a substantial increase in revenue. Wix, a website builder, saw the number of its new users jump up by 63 percent in April.
