L’Oreal abandons all its domains

Several days ago it was reported that XYZ company is contemplating launching five new generic top level domains in 2020. At that time, it was only known that .Quest would be one of them. It has now become clear, according to Domain Incite, that the other domains will be: .Makeup, .Beauty, .Hair and .Skin.

Previously, all these domains were delegated to L’Oreal of France, a world leader on the perfumery and cosmetics market. At the beginning of the first stage of the ICANN program for new generic top level domains, L’Oreal was among its most active supporters. L’Oreal applied for 12 new domains at once. Some of them were the company’s brand names while others, including .Makeup, .Beauty, .Hair and .Skin, were supposed to be used as closed generics, although their names were dictionary words that are in common use. Later ICANN banned the very concept of closed generics, but this was far from the only reason for L’Oreal giving up its domain plans. The company simply could not find ways of applying all its domains and gave them up, one by one. .Makeup, .Beauty, .Hair and .Skin were the last in its portfolio and they have now replenished the XYZ registry’s portfolio. The latter, perhaps should be congratulated: the domains look promising enough and with competent management could become rather popular.
