How to lose $147,000 on a domain name

The Domains has a sad and instructive story about the domain name sexe.org (French for sex). In 2008, it was registered by famous domain investor Michael Berkens who obviously hoped to resell it to French-speaking customers. At that time, he sold it to the French company SARL GN Multimedia for an impressive $151,400. This deal remains the seventh most expensive public purchase-sale contract in the .ORG domain zone.

The new owners then turned it into a porn website that failed however to become an industry giant in this particular field. According to analysts, the .ORG domain is not suited for porn resources, as proved by the website sexe.org. After the website closed down, its owners spent a few years trying to get their money back but eventually decided to rid themselves of the domain. They auctioned it off and got $4,457 at Sedo last week, losing $146,943. However, many commentators called the initial purchase rather strange and said that Michael Berkens was really lucky to have found customers who paid so handsomely for a worthless domain name.
