Google has opened up its “Limited Registration Period” on its .NEW top-level domain. But this does not imply high-priority or premium registration periods when new domains are usually opened. The “Limited Registration Period” sets forth some tough requirements. Future registrants should submit their applications and business cases describing how the domains would be used. Naturally, this implies premium names that all registrants want to obtain. According to Domain Incite, there are umpteen major services, including eBay, Spotify and Github that have already filed their applications. Other applicants include the Canadian musician Drake the rapper.
Strict rules for users are on the whole explained by the new domain’s unusual concept. Google wants all registrants to use all its names for creating new content, and the company’s doc.new domain is a case in point. A new Google Docs document opens when the user types in this domain name. The first applications also follow this principle. For example, people going to the sell.new domain (eBay application) will create new pages for auctioning off various lots. And a new playlist will be created by those going to the playlist.new domain (Spotify application).
Those joining the “Limited Registration Period” should be patient because a special team of Google judges will review all applications and business cases in several stages, due to end in June 2020. No auctions are stipulated if one domain name gets several applications. The very same Google team will choose the best registrar who deserves to get the domain name.
