Neustar gets 10-year extension on .us domain

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration of the United States announced a 10-year extension of its contract with Neustar to manage the gTLD .us (up to 2029). Neustar has operated the domain since 2001. According to Domain Name Wire, the US government does not pay Neustar for running .us, but the company receives registration fees from .us registrants.

The gTLD .us is the country code domain of the United States, and has over two million names registered today. Most of them belong to state agencies and organizations. Unlike the country code domains in many other countries, .us is not seen as the national domain by Americans. Since the US pioneered the development of the internet, many Americans consider .com, the first popular domain, to be their country code.
