Company buys typo domain

Major domain registry GoDaddy held another auction for expired domain names. BlueDot.com stirred the most interest among bidders as the final price was $33,100, according to Domain Name Wire. It is noteworthy that the domain was bought by BluDot, a popular furniture company.

BlueDot.com is a typosquatting domain, i.e. its name resembles that of a famous brand. Cyber criminals often register such domain names in order to create malicious websites. However, this time it is a completely different story. First of all, the domain was registered back in 1995: two years before BluDot was founded. Second of all, the domain’s last owner had absolutely no criminal intentions or any intentions whatsoever. He did not renew the registration, so the domain was auctioned.

Still, BluDot didn’t want to miss the opportunity of getting a domain name that could potentially imitate its own website. As of today, visitors to Bluedot.com are redirected to BluDot.com, the company’s official website.
