At the end of last week, Verisign reported that the number of domain names in the .COM domain it manages had reached 140 million for the first time. As of May 22, there were 140,016,726 names; the total number of domain names together with those that have been registered but not yet included in the domain file was 141,857,360.
This is another mark for the most popular gTLD. The previous milestone, 130 million, was reached in November 2017, according to Domain Incite. This means that it took the domain about 18 months to add another 10 million names. However, not all Verisign domains can boast the same activity. The number of names registered in .NET is still declining. As of the end of last week, there were 13,441,748 registered names, or 13,668,548 in total with all the names registered but not yet included. This company can still say the domain has “about 14 million” names, but if the decline continues, rounding up to big numbers will soon be more difficult.
