ICANN to equalize .ORG and .INFO with new domains

The ICANN corporation has suggested new draft agreements to the registries of the domains .ORG and .INFO (Public Interest Registry and Afilias, respectively). There are amendments aimed at standardizing registration agreements for all gTLDs and thus equalize the ‘old’ and ‘new’ domains. In particular, new agreements include the introduction of the Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) of domain names in .ORG and .INFO. It works in new gTLDs and allows copyright holders to speedily ban domains suspected of cybersquatting without a relevant decision made as part of the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).

Another, even more important topic is that ICANN refuses to control the registration cost of domain names. In new domain zones, registries are free to establish any price they want; it is assumed that the market itself will serve as a regulator. As for the ‘old’ domains, there are limits. For instance, the current contracts of .ORG and .INFO with ICANN say that the registration price cannot be increased by more than 10% a year. Although this is also a serious opportunity for growth, it is still not boundless.

Many observers and participants on the domain market are cautions about the ICANN initiative. Thus, Domain Name Wire columnist Andrew Allemann says that the Public Interest Registry and Afilias are unlikely to increase prices by 100 and 1,000 times. However, ICANN's decision does not consider the interests of registrants who purchased domain names in ‘old’ domain zones under concrete rules. Now these rules are being constantly changed.
