.IN transferred to Neustar

NIXI, the .IN registry, announced on March 1 that the transfer of .IN to Neustar had been completed. The former technical operator of.IN was Afilias, but Neustar managed to win the tender for the ccTLD maintenance, announced last year by the government of India. According to Domain Incite, Neustar offered a significantly lower price for servicing each domain name than its rival.

Afilias was not happy about the situation and even filed a lawsuit against the government of India, but all claims were rejected. It took just 48 hours to transfer .IN to Neustar’s servers. Today, there are about 2.2 million registered names in .IN. The simultaneous transfer of such a vast number of domain names made the process the third largest transfer in the history of the internet. The last year’s transfer of the Australian ccTLD .AU was the biggest one, then 3.1 million registered names migrated from Neustar to Afilias.
