Premium registration in the new gTLD .DEV opened on February 19. It is managed by Google and is mainly intended for computer software and mobile application developers. .DEV is short for developer. However, so far only very wealthy developers are able to apply for names in the new domain zone as the cost of registering premium names is about $10,000.
Premium registration is based on the Dutch-auction style: names are put up for registration at the highest possible price. Then the price decreases until someone wants to buy it. By the end of today, the price of a premium domain name in .DEV could drop to $3,000, according to Domain Name Wire. Developers not interested in applying for premium names can wait. The General Availability period starts on February 28 when .DEV domains can be purchased for only $10-15 for annual registration.
