Registering domain names in the .law extension to get simpler

The registration process in the extensions .law and .abogado (“lawyer” in Spanish) has become much easier due to a decision of MMX, the registry of these new top-level domains.

As is known, registration with .law and .abogado has been limited to lawyers and legal institutions, including law firms, law schools and courts. This will remain unchanged, but from now on, the information will be validated through the standard Whois field rather than additional registration fields. The measure will enable more registrars to onboard new users in these zones. The registrars will employ standard verification tools without wasting resources on further development and integration of the required software. According to the Domain Name Wire, the changes will be effective starting on January 7, 2019.

On its official website, MMX highlights that the registration restrictions for .law and .abogado TLDs aim to promote trust in the professional legal community, and the thorough check of registrants serves that very purpose. The registry believes that simplifying the verification procedure will help increase the number of names registered with .law and .abogado in 2019. To date, the .law domain contains 11,300 names and .abogado has 325 names.
