General registration opens for .CHARITY

Online Domain reports that a new gTLD, .CHARITY, is now available for general registration. The gTLD is managed by Donuts, a registry that defeated its competitor, Famous Four Media, during a private auction last March. As is clear from the name, the domain zone is intended for people and organizations involved in charity. In its press release, Donuts says that .CHARITY domains may be used for websites meant “to drive awareness for their cause, to collect donations online, and to find new volunteers, supporters and partners.” In an anti-fraud measure, domain name registrants must prove that they are actually involved in philanthropy.

Annual registration in .CHARITY with the majority of registrars is $30 to $40. By the start of the general availability period (September 20), the domain zone already had 307 registered domains. According to Namestat.org, there are now 951 .CHARITY domains, which experts consider to be a good rate for a non-profit domain zone.
