Domain Tools reported a record of over a billion domain names in its database. The company has been keeping record of all the registered domain names for 17 years, and its database is considered to provide the most complete and reliable information. Currently, about 350 million registered domain names exist worldwide, with nearly twice as many names once registered and then deleted, as the one billion figure suggests.
By way of comparison, the domain zone .COM now has a little more than 130 million domains, while according to Domain Tools, 434 million names were registered there. As for the new generic top-level domains, the most depressing stats come from the domain .REALTY – 97 percent of its registered names are not renewed but forever deleted. The domain .BOSTON boasts the best result, with the share of deleted names at just 0.3 percent.
