Israel rejected due to security concerns

The second out of three annual ICANN meetings in 2020 could have been held in Tel Aviv, Domain Incite reports. One of Israel’s domain registrars submitted a proposal that the meeting be held in Tel Aviv. As is known, ICANN has a regional rotation policy, so, according to the schedule, the second 2020 meeting should have been held in the Asia-Pacific Region.

However, the proposal to hold the meeting in Tel Aviv was rejected by the corporation’s board of directors because of security concerns. Namely, due to the “proximity to the Gaza strip and the escalation of an Iran/Israel conflict.” It should be mentioned that the other proposed venues included Macau (China), Auckland (New Zealand), and Sydney and Adelaide (Australia). Eventually, all of them were rejected in favor of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
