Largest domain name sale of the year

Several websites covering the latest domain industry news recently reported the largest domain sale of the year among publicly-known transactions: the Ice.com domain has been sold for $3.5 million, beating the 2018 record set by Super.com, which had been sold in early March for $1.2 million. Insiders also state that another domain name, Crypto.com, has reportedly been sold for $12 million, but this information was not confirmed by the representatives of both the buyer and the seller.

The Ice.com domain name was registered back in 1990. Until recently, it belonged to an online business selling jewelry products. On June 30, 2018, the company moved its website to a newly registered domain name icetrends.com. The ice.com domain name is not currently resolving, while its whois account is protected, so it is impossible to find out who bought the website. Prominent blogger Konstantinos Zournas, who writes about domain names for the Online Domain website, believes that the buyer is the InterContinental Exchange, Inc. (ICE), famous financial company from the annual Fortune 500 list.
