British websites in .EU domain may be deleted

A meeting between the UK domain registrar community and EURid, the operator of the .EU domain, had a controversial outcome. EURid took a tough stand: it announced that all domain names registered to UK owners will be deleted on March 30, 2019, if the European and UK authorities did not revise the Brexit agreement. According to a previous report, EURid will prohibit new registrations and the extension of existing .EU domains owned by UK citizens due to the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. However, instant revocation of all UK-owned domains goes even further. For example, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, .SU domain owners were given until the natural expiry of their websites.

EURid’s decision means that many websites will be suspended on March 30 next year. Many leading UK businesses, including financial service providers and online retailers, use .EU addresses, according to Domain Pulse. These businesses have less than a year to plan a transition to a new non-.EU domain.
