.APP domain off to a good start

The domain industry is expecting a major premiere as the new .app top-level domain is about to open public registration. Many experts expect the domain to have extraordinary potential. Google paid $25 million at an auction to gain control of the domain.

The domain is finishing its sunrise period (priority registration), with some good results. Protected trademark owners have shown serious interest in the TLD. Domain Name Wire reports that 2,225 names are already registered with the domain, including some prominent and traditional major players. Apple has registered 75 names, Microsoft 41 names and Bank of America 27 names.

Priority registration will close in late April. During the following week, premium registration will be available in the Dutch auction format: the premium domain name price will drop until the first bid. Finally, general registration will begin on May 8.
