“Domain Brexit”

European Commission announced its plans to forbid British citizens and legal entities from registering new and renewing existing domains in the all-European domain .EU. The decision comes after the official confirmation of British authorities that they intend to leave the EU on 30 March 2019. Domain .EU is designed for citizens and legal bodies of the European Union; therefore, Brexit will mean exclusion of Britain from all-European domain zone as well.

Bleeping Computer reports that representation of Britain in .EU domain is quite significant, the country is fourth by the number of registered domains; it’s behind only Germany, the Netherlands and France. According to the domain’s registry EURid, British registrants owned 317,286 names in the domain zone .EU as of the end of last year. Michele Neylon, the head of the Irish hosting company and domain registrar Blacknight, in relation to this said that the decision of European Commission could negatively affect both statistics of .EU domain and the state of affairs of many European registrars.
