Canadian airline “flew by” its domains

Small Canadian airline Flair Airlines Ltd. has filed a lawsuit in Illinois against its former technical partners. The company demands to get back two of its domains and a compensation of losses. According to the Domain Name Wire, which published the news, the situation is the clearest example of why any company should never, under no circumstances, entrust registration of its domain names to a third party.

Flair Airlines Ltd. worked with two contractors in the past that provided customer and website support. They were also instructed to register domains FlairAirlines.com and FlairAirlines.ca for the company. Afterwards, when the relationships between the company and contractors deteriorated and the cooperation ended, Flair Airlines Ltd. was surprised to find out that the domains belonged to the contractors and not to the airline. It quickly had to transfer online operations to a new domain FlairAir.ca, which caused serious financial damage. On the first day of the transfer online sales fell from $64,000 to $29,000. Moreover, the company also has to pay for advertising in Google Adwords to direct clients to the “correct” website.
