DENIC will limit information available in Whois

DENIC registry announced the revision of its Whois policy in connection with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force in May in the European Union. It was reported previously that DENIC, which manages German country-code domain .DE, analyzed the reasons why visitors requested Whois information. The results of this research formed the basis for the forthcoming changes.

Domain Name Wire reports that the changes announced by DENIC mean that public Whois records would not contain any personal data of domain name registrants. Records will show the status of the domain, technical data (for example, the name of the DNS server) and two email addresses. One of them will be used for general and technical requests, while the other is to report unfair use of the domain name. Both addresses will be non-personalized and the registrar will manage them. Users that can prove that their interest in registrant’s personal data is legit will get the opportunity to send an appropriate request.
