Online Domain reported a creation of a new organization called “Domain Name Rights Coalition” (DNRC). It is marketed as the first public organization to represent interests of domain name registrants. Attorney Kathy Kleiman is the co-founder and President of the organization. A graduate of Harvard University she has a vast experience in both business and ICANN structures.
According to the DNRC representatives, so-called multistakeholder model of Internet governance should provide equal participation of all interested parties in solving key issues and developing policies that determine the development of the Internet. However, it’s the governments, rights holders, business and academic circles that have organizations and institutions that represent their interests, meanwhile registrants are involved in the process of governance the least. It primarily applies to individuals, non-profits, individual entrepreneurs and representatives of small businesses. DNRC’s goal is to change this situation. The organization intends to establish cooperation with representatives of governments, scientific and technological institutions. Another direction of DNRC’s activities is educating registrants, they wish to increase the awareness of their rights as well as the processes of Internet governance and decision-making mechanisms that affect their interests.
