Verisign presented its traditional monthly list of words that were the most popular among new domain names’ registrants. January top ten of the domain zone .COM doesn't seem very noticeable by itself: 1 – near, 2 – cell, 3 – dispensary, 4 – stem, 5 – claim, 6 – centers, 7 – hole, 8 – residential, 9 – nano, 10 – cane. However, what draws attention is that there are no cryptocurrency or mining-related terms on this list.
This is quite interesting considering that words “coin”, “crypto”, “mine currency”, etc. were constantly on the list of TOP-10 in .COM domain for months, while TOP-10 for November consisted almost exclusively of them. According to the Domain Name Wire, January results hardly indicate a decrease in public interest in crypto-currencies. It should be understood that Verisign ratings do not focus on the words that are used in new gTLDs more often than others, but on the words the usage of which showed the highest growth compared to previous periods. Therefore, the correct conclusion most probably is that the majority of fitting crypto-currency names have already been registered and the further growth of their number will slow down.
