Public Interest Registry: 15 years managing .ORG

Nonprofit public organization Public Interest Registry celebrates its anniversary. 15 years ago, in January 2003, Public Interest Registry, an initiative of the Internet Society (ISOC), was created and became the administrator of the generic top-level domain (gTLD) .ORG. In a post on its website, Public Interest Registry summarizes the work done and expresses how proud it is of the achieved results. In particular, it is pointed out that at the moment the domain .ORG is the third largest gTLD in the world by the number of registrations (10.3 million names).

The mission of the .ORG domain is also stressed out in the post. It was created in 1985 specifically to serve the needs of public organizations. Even though there are no restrictions on registration in the domain zone now, it is still a priority choice for charities, human rights, environmental organizations and many other types of public organizations as well as companies and activists that support such activities. Authors of the blog post cite a study conducted in 2017, which showed that 72% of donors all over the world trust websites and email addresses that use .ORG more than any other else.

In addition, the publication reminds that Public Interest Registry is one of the few nonprofits, which manage gTLDs. Registration fees from each domain name registered in .ORG go to the Internet Society, the main goal of which is to ensure freedom and accessibility of the Internet.
