Registry dotFM, which administers the top-level domain .FM, reported that in the near future it would allow registration of single-emoji domains. The registry published a full list of over 250 domain names on its official website, all of which are open for registration. According to the ICANN rules, emoji domain names are forbidden in generic top-level domains because they are not supported by many applications and their existence leads to technical problems.
However, this rule doesn’t affect country-code domains, which is what registries take advantage of. Thus, the most well known top-level domain that allows registration of emoji-names is .WS. Technically, it’s the country-code domain (ccTLD) of Western Samoa, but the registry advertises it as an abbreviation for “web site”. The situation with .FM is the same. Technically, it’s the ccTLD for Micronesia, but it is advertised as the perfect domain for FM radio stations.
