Polish ccTLD is in decline

NASK registry, which operates Polish national domain .PL, has released its third-quarter report and the results don’t look promising. A serious decrease since the beginning of the year has continued: the growth rates of new domain names are declining and the renewal rate is not high either. As a result, as of the end of September there were 2,592,014 names registered in the domain zone. This is over 125 thousand less than a year ago.

The average renewal rate in .PL domain, according to the report, was 62.22%. This is slightly higher than last year, but the result is still hardly satisfying. Domain Incite quotes NASK director Wojciech Kamieniecki, who links the decline with the appearance of new generic top-level domains. “Temporary slowdown of the dynamics of the .pl domain market, observed from the beginning of the year — decrease in the number of new registrations — should be perceived in the light of extending the selection of attractive names as well as a growing number of new generic domains and increase in competition in the global domain market”, believes Kamieniecki.
