On October 31st, Amazon registered three domain names that have a direct link to blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. These are amazoncryptocurrencies.com, amazoncryptocurrency.com and amazonethereum.com. Some observers believe that this proves that the company has interest in blockchain. Several of them even voice suggestions that the tech giant is actively working of creation of its own cryptocurrency.
At the same time, Domain Name Wire expresses doubt that these guesses are actually true. The authors note that Amazon takes protection of its brand in the domain space very seriously. This is the reason why we are not talking about the future appearance of some “amazoncoin”. Most probably these are just defensive registrations: the company follows popular trends and registers domain names that combine the trends and its own trademark to avoid their registration by someone else.
