Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) approved 8 new gTLDs (generic top-level domains) to be used by Chinese organizations and citizens. MMX registry got licenses for .WORK, .LAW, .BEER and .购物 (“shopping” in Chinese). Radix registry’s four domain also got licenses, there are .FUN, .ONLINE, .STORE and .TECH, reports Domain Incite.
According to Chinese law, country’s citizens and organizations have a right to register domain names in all domain zones. However, they can create websites only if the domain has a license to be used in China. Licensing implies, among other things, that the registry complies with strict Internet censorship that is in force in China. Taking into account the licenses received by Radix and MMX, the number of gTLDs allowed in China and use Latin symbols and not hieroglyphs has exceeded 20. Licensing is quite a lengthy process – previous licenses (also for 8 new domains) were given by MIIT back in April.
