Verisign has published its Domain Name Industry Brief report for the second quarter of this year. It shows that 331.9 million domain names were registered across the world by June 30. However, the growth decrease continues. For example, the number of domain name registrations grew by 6.7 million, or 2.1 percent from June 2016 to June 2017, compared with 12.9 percent the previous year. DomainPulse experts, who published the report, explain the situation by the fact that markets in many countries as well as regions are close to saturation level.
The .COM and .NET TLDs closed the second quarter with a combined total of 144.3 million showing a 0.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. The national TLDs showed more growth with an increase of registrations by 3.7 million, i.e. 2.6 percent compared with the previous year. The total domain name registrations in national TLDs reached 144.2 million. As of June 30, there were 302 global ccTLD extensions delegated in the root, including Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), with the top 10 ccTLDs composing 64.8 percent of all ccTLD registrations. The top 10 ccTLDs are .CN (China), .TK (Tokelau), .DE (Germany), .UK (United Kingdom), .RU (Russia), .NL (Netherlands), .BR (Brazil), .EU (European Union), .AU (Australia) and .FR (France).
