Malta steps up to the next level

Malta’s national domain registrar .MT reports that it is introducing registration of second-level domain names. Earlier, only third-level domain names were available in this zone, such as .com.mt, .org.mt, .net.mt, .edu.mt and .gov.mt. The changes will take effect as soon as December 1. Malta thus has followed the example of several other countries that have also stepped up to the second-level domain names in the past years. The countries already using second-level domains include the United Kingdom (.UK), New Zealand (.NZ) and Kenya (.KE).

Owners of the existing third-level domain names in the .MT domain will have a preferential right to register their respective second-level domain names free of charge until November 2020. NIC (Malta) will also significantly reduce the registration fee, which currently amounts to 20-30 euros per year. The fee will be halved starting in December.
