Domain industry calculates losses from hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma that struck the Caribbean islands and the US state of Florida seriously damaged several domain registries. Thus, the disaster seriously damaged the headquarters of .CLUB registry in Fort Lauderdale. “Literally, it looks like a bomb went off”, Domain Incite quotes the head of the registry Colin Campbell. “I couldn’t believe the damage. It’s truly a sad day for our company.” Chief marketing officer Jeff Sass explained that the storm torn away big parts of the roof and the wind and rain destroyed almost everything that was inside the offices. Fortunately, none of the .CLUB employees got hurt. The storm also didn’t affect the work of the registry, because it was mainly administrative functions that were performed at the headquarters in Fort Lauderdale. All operational activity is done from an office in Virginia, which is hundreds of kilometers away up North from the hurricane.

It became known previously that hurricane Irma caused interruptions in the work of the .AI domain registry. This domain has lately become popular among Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies. However, it is in fact a ccTLD for the island of Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory. Anguilla island was affected by the storm. DNS servers of the registry, it seems, haven’t been affected; however, all operations regarding registration and transfer of domain names in .AI were put on hold.
