Elon Musk bought X.com

Famous entrepreneur Elon Musk bought X.com domain name. The first to report this was domain investor Elliot Silver in his blog DomainInvesting. When he was checking Whois data of especially rare and valuable domain names, he discovered that registration data of X.com had changed. For many years it was PayPal that was domain’s registrant, but now registrant’s data went private and domain’s registrar also changed.

Silver reached out to PayPal, and the company soon confirmed that the domain had been sold to its previous owner – Elon Musk. Musk actually owned X.com from 1999 and used it for payment service of the same name. However, in 2000 his company merged with Confinity and as a result of it service PayPal was created. Later on, the rights on the domain were transferred to the new company.

The sides refuse to reveal the price; however, it’s obviously several million. One-letter domains in .COM are rare and very expensive. For example, domain Z.com was sold in 2014 for almost US$6.8 million. Interestingly enough, Elon Musk himself confirmed the deal and admitted that he didn’t know what to do with the domain yet. “Thanks PayPal for allowing me to buy back X.com!” wrote the billionaire on Twitter. “No plans right now, but it has great sentimental value to me.”
