India to have 16 national domain names

ICAAN Board of Directors has taken the decision to assign eight more internationalized domain name versions of the languages Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Sindhi, Bengali, Nepali, Arabic and Hindi to India. According to Domain Incite, the vast majority of countries do with one or two national domain names. India has been operating eight domain names: .IN country code top-level domain, plus seven internationalized ones. Now the number of its national domains will reach a record of 16.

The reason for this is the country’s ethnic and linguistic diversity. A total of 122 languages are spoken in India, of which 30 are spoken by over a million people. The plans are to include the domain names in the DNS root zone in the current year. They will be managed and operated by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).
