New gTLD .VIP demonstrates great renewal rate

Minds + Machines published the first data on registration renewal rates in the generic top-level domain (gTLD) it administers - .VIP. The domain was launched mid-May last year and according to the registry over 60% of those who registered names in the first month of its existence has renewed them. Moreover, less than one percent of registrants refused to renew.

OnlineDomain explains that domain .VIP, as the vast majority of new gTLDs, has an auto-renew grace period, which means that the domain will be renewed automatically for 30-45 more days after the registration has expired. Therefore, less than 1 percent of registrants are those who eliminated their domain names “manually”. It’s clear that this number will significantly increase after the grace period finished and many registrants won’t remember that they need to renew a domain they don’t use. However, 60 percent renewal rate is a very good result. Minds + Machines registry in relation to this optimistically believes that the final renewal rate after the first year will be no less than 70. It should be recalled that domain .VIP is the most popular in China. From approximately 800 thousand names registered over 700 thousand registrations were made by Chinese registrants.
