Science and study – the main sources of threats

DomainTools presented data of its newest study of malicious activity in the domain space. Current issue of the DomainTools Report sums up the data for this year's spring. Based on the analysis of the activity of over 315 million domain names it is claimed in the report that new generic top-level domains .SCIENCE and .STUDY account for the highest percentage of malicious activity, reports The Register.

Thus, out of about 230 thousand registered domain names at the time of the research over 144 thousand (63%) ended up involved in different types of malicious activities in the .SCIENCE domain, which tops the list of the most dangerous ones. Obviously, research authors do not believe that science and study are somehow especially attractive for criminals. The problem most probably is that cyber criminals are constantly looking for new possibilities choosing new domain zones for registration. The guess is further confirmed by the fact that not a single domain from the current top ten of the “most malicious” was there two years ago when a similar list was made.

Moreover, what especially draws attention is that the same people register the majority of malicious domains. “Even more noteworthy, perhaps, is that the blacklisted domains in .science are dominated by a single registrant,” said Tim Helming, director of product management at DomainTools. Similar situation occurs in the new generic top-level domain .RACING, which is on the third position in the list of 10 “most malicious”.
