Uniregistry retracted

Uniregistry, a registry for 27 new generic top-level domains, has considerably revised its original decision to sharply increase fees for registration and renewal. It was reported earlier that the fee for registration and renewal in 16 domain zones - .juegos, .hosting, .audio, .diet, .hiphop, .flowers, .guitars, .property, .blackfriday, .sexy, .christmas, .click, .help, .pics, .tattoo and .link – will increase many times in the beginning of September. In many domains the fee will be increased by several hundred percent, in some cases even up to 3000 percent. Managing Director of the company Frank Schilling explained that this step is necessary because of the economic difficulties faced by the new domains.

Uniregistry’s decision caused uproar in the domain community. GoDaddy, the largest domain registrar, refused to work with Uniregistry’s new generic domains, many talked about the failure of the program of new generic top-level domains. Such a reaction forced the company to reconsider its plans. Domain Incite reports that Uniregistry has issued a press release where it explains that the price increase will only affect the domains registered after September 8th this year. The document highlights that introducing such differentiation is difficult technically; however, the company took this step taking into the account the negative reaction of customers. Therefore, those willing to have a domain name registered in one of the domain zones operated by Uniregistry can register them now, if they haven’t done this yet. In this case they will renew their registration in the future at current (and quite accessible) prices.
