Makeup is growing in price

Cosmetics company L’Oréal, a registry of the new generic top-level domain (gTLD) .MAKEUP, plans to significantly increase the registration fee in this domain, reports DomainNameWire. Initially, L’Oréal intended to restrict the domain and make it available for its own use only. However, ICANN corporation banned restricted usage of domains, which are common dictionary words, so-called closed generic TLDs.

L’Oréal complied with ICANN rules and opened registration; however, made the process extremely difficult. According to its requirements, only names of cosmetics manufacturers or brands could be registered in the domain. However, even this rule didn't seem enough. From April 14th L’Oréal is planning to increase the registration fee almost 17 times. Even now it's quite high and amounts to approximately US$300 for annual registration. However, from the second half of April this sum will be over US$5,000. At the moment there are only around 100 names registered in .MAKEUP domain zone, L’Oréal new price policy will hardly contribute to the growth of this number.
