WIPO sees new record

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published the statistics for the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) cases filed with the organization last year. In 2016, WIPO processed 3,036 complaints, which is a 10 percent increase on 2015 and a new record. However, since WIPO is not the only provider of dispute resolution services under the UDRP, the total number of complaints is much higher.

As for the WIPO stats, generic top level domain (gTLD) .COM remains the leader for the number of disputes (67 percent), followed by .XYZ, .NET, .TOP and .ORG. The newly registered gTLDs accounted for 16 percent of all the UDRP complaints. The most active complainant was Philip Morris, which filed 67 cases with WIPO over the past year.
