.COM and Brazil are “champions” of phishing

PhishLabs presented the Phishing Trends & Intelligence Report. It summarizes the data on activities of around a million phishing websites discovered by company’s experts during last year. An important part of the report is dedicated to the distribution of phishing among domain zones. The leader obviously is gTLD .COM. The study highlights that around 48% of all existing domain names are registered in .COM zone. 51% of all discovered phishing websites were registered in .COM domain.

The undisputable leader among ccTLDs was Brazilian domain - .BR – 8% of the total number of phishing websites. Talking about the new gTLDs, they showed an increase of 1000% in phishing activity compared to 2015. Nevertheless, their combined share is still not very significant. Considering the fact that new gTLDs comprise 8% of all registered domain names, among the phishing websites only 2% are registered in the new gTLDs. However, experts at PhishLabs predict the increase of phishing in the new domain zones. The main reason is the very low registration fee in many new domains such as .XYZ, .TOP, .ONLINE, .CLUB, .WEBSITE and many others.
