“Pirate ship” in .ORG domain will sink soon

Public Interest Registry that administers .ORG gTLD announced that it would make the life of rights holders so much easier soon, reports Domain Incite. It is willing to introduce a Copyright Alternative Dispute Resolution Policy (ADRP).

The main provisions of the ADRP have been recently published by the Domain Name Association (DNA) among other measures aimed at getting rid of all criminal resources online. ADRP is an analogue of the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP), designed to solve concrete issues related to copyright violations. Its advantage for right holders is that the procedure itself is very simple and quick and the fee to file the complaint is less than US$1500, which is much lower than the cost of going to the court. ADRP doesn’t provide any financial sanctions against violators; however, it allows to block domains that were found guilty and transfer them to the rights holders.

Introduction of ADRP is not a requirement of ICANN, every registry decides for itself whether it is willing to use the policy. The Public Interest Registry general counsel Liz Finberg points out that the domain zone .ORG is relatively “clean” compared to many other. But there are names related to copyright violations. Among them, for example, a famous torrent tracker The Pirate Bay, since some time it occupies thepiratebay.org. “If I were to say what’s the one .org that is the prime candidate for being the very first one out of the gate, I would say it’s The Pirate Bay”, said Finberg.
