Renewal of premium names is too expensive

Domain investor Konstantinos Zournas in his blog on OnlineDomain draws attention to a curious upward trend. A growing number of 1-letter names in the new gTLDs are being put up for secondary auctions of domain names. We are talking about names such as e.toys, e.watch, i.company, d.gold, etc. All of these names are considered premium and were purchased by their owners for quite a lot of money. However, now for some reasons they are not needed anymore.

Zournas believes that the reason could be that the renewal prices are way too expensive. According to the data he presented, in many cases it is around US$450. Therefore, investors, who registered such premium names and in a year faced the need to spend a lot on renewals, simply prefer to get rid of the asset that was not very profitable. However, on the auctions it's highly likely that other investors, who in a similar way don’t want to create any resources but hope to sell at a profit, would buy up these names. As a result, 1-letter names in new gTLDs that initially we seen as promising are doomed to end up auctioned off year after year.
