The registration of new Generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) is a portfolio business. Large investors register big groups of names hoping to sell them when the popularity of new domains increases, according to The Domains, an industry news site publishing up-to-date content created by domain name experts.
The resource writes, citing ntldstats.com, that there are nearly 25 million new gTLDs registered. The top 10 registrants of new gTLD domains own some 1.9 million or about 7.5% of all new gTLD domains.
A look at the top 20 registrants shows that they control over 2.5 million names or over 10% of all registered new gTLDs. And lastly, the largest holder of new gTLDs is someone in China that owns 476,398 domain names. It is not clear if this registrant is a private individual or a company, although the latter is more probable.
