The number of names registered in .US domain zone for the first time has exceeded 2 million, reports webportal The Domains. .US is the US ccTLD, which was launched on February 15th 1985 and became the first country-code domain in history. It is administered by Neustar, a name can be registered only by United States citizens or residents, American organizations or corporations and any foreign entity with a bona fide presence in the United States.
Back in March there were about 1.7 million registered names. The reason for current record is huge sales on registration fees announced by a large registrar Uniregistry. From the beginning of October it lowered the annual registration fee in .US to 10 cents. On the first day of the sale about 100 thousand new names were registered in the domain. On the last day – October 7th – about 28 thousand. As a result after the sale was over there were 2,001,216 registered domains in .US.
