One week is left before the premium domain sale ends in the new generic top-level domain .SHOP. At the moment there are about 2 thousand names registered in the domain, about 1200 of them during the Sunrise period. At this stage registrants have a possibility to register the most promising premium names for clearly higher prices. They are quite active. Hiro Tsukahara, CEO of GMO Registry that manages .SHOP, said that the revenue had already exceeded 2 million dollars.
GMO Registry paid $41.5 million on the ICANN auction for .SHOP. This makes the domain the second most expensive one after .WEB, which was sold for record 135 million. In the interview to the Domain Name Wire Hiro Tsukahara highlighted that the company realized that it would take a long time to recoup the investment. At the same time he expressed confidence that the strategic development plan for .SHOP is correct and will inevitably bear fruit. Partly it is proven by several of the achieved results. For example, Tsukahara said that domain Beauty.shop was registered for a very considerable sum – about 500 thousand dollars. Just below $100 thousand was paid for the registration of another premium name – Fan.shop.
