Domain in exchange for a school

The largest Indian financial and industrial conglomerate Tata Group keeps trying to get .TATA domain. Back in 2014 the corporation was close to having its own dot-brand, however, the government of Morocco interfered last minute. The problem is that there is a little province called Tata in this North African country. According to ICANN rules, this means that .TATA name is «geographical» and the domain cannot be delegated without the approval of the authorities of the corresponding country or region. Negotiations between Morocco government and Tata Group were unsuccessful and delegation of .TATA domain was forbidden.

However, the Indian newspaper New Indian Express reports that Tata Group is still focused on getting the domain. Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper wrote that the corporation approached the government of India to using diplomatic channels initiate new negotiations with the Moroccan government. Moreover, Tata Group is willing to pay for the construction of a school in Tata province in exchange of allowance to delegate the domain. Curiously enough, if such agreement is reached, the practice of exchanging domains for schools will be considered almost universal. At one time, registry Punto 2012 that claimed the domain .BAR faced a similar problem: Montenegro government didn’t give permission to delegate the domain, because there is a small resort town Bar on the territory of Montenegro. As a result the parties came to an agreement when the registry gave $100 thousand to the town's administration for the same reason - to build a school.
