Well-known programmer Dave Winer was honored to be the first website owner in the new generic top-level domain .BLOG. Dave Winer’s blog called “Scripting News” exists for almost 20 years since 1997 and has become the first popular tech blog in history.
Earlier on, Winer heavily criticized Google corporation that applied for .BLOG for its intention to use the domain only for users of its Blogger platform. “I played a role in establishing blogs”, he wrote. “How does Google get the write to capture all the goodwill generated in the word blog?” As a result Google lost in the private auction. Company KKWT won the right to manage the domain. Soon it was revealed that Automattic, the owner of the popular blogging platform WordPress, was behind KKWT.
Dave Winer, who has already started its blog Dave.blog, expressed full satisfaction with this outcome. He points out that Automattic unlike Google is not trying to arrogate the right to the word “blog” and gives users necessary freedom. He highlights that he will use his own blogging software 1999.io an not WordPress.
