1,000th new gTLD delegated

The number of new delegated gTLDs has reached 1,000, Domain Incite writes. However, it is difficult to determine which domain was the thousandth, as it could have been .SHOP or .REALESTATE, both of which appear to have been added to the DNS root zone at about the same time.

Moreover, the actual number of new domains in the DNS root zone is 999, because .DOOSAN was retired in February by a South Korean corporation of the same name.

At the beginning of the new gTLD program, ICANN based its root zone stability planning on the assumption that fewer than 1,000 TLDs would be added to the root per year. In fact, it’s taken much longer to reach that threshold. The first few new gTLDs were added in late October 2013, or 945 days ago. Over the same period, nine internationalized country code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) have also been delegated.

In other words, a new gTLD has been added to the root zone approximately once a day.

As of now, there are 1,314 TLDs in the root zone.
