On May 24, celebrated as the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture, .РУС, a new Cyrillic domain, launched open name registration. Any user who wishes to receive a .РУС domain name can file an application and register the name he or she has chosen. This can be done at Я.РУС, a new information website where you can find out everything you need to know about .РУС and go through the registration formalities quickly and easily.
More than 2,000 Russian and foreign companies and brands are already using .РУС. Statistics reveal a wide geography of Runet users. Although the majority of .РУС name buyers are predictably from Russia, there are also users from Belarus, Denmark, the United States, Switzerland, Israel, Luxemburg and other countries.
“We congratulate our colleagues on the launch of open name registration. I think that .РУС will be a success because Russian is second by the volume of Internet content after English, and Russian-language domains are becoming increasingly popular. Just yesterday, during an expanded meeting of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/РФ’s committees, held on the sidelines of the IT+Internet forum, we discussed preparations for the ICANN conference in Helsinki, scheduled for June. We are planning to add to its agenda and discuss with other representatives of the international domain community the need to promote IDNs, including Cyrillic domains. This topic concerns many countries, and the .РУС domain name will be able share its success story with us,” Andrey Vorobyev, director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/РФ, said.
