Internet of Things to serve as impetus for IPv6 development

A conference to celebrate Russian IPv6 Day, held annually by the company MSK-IX, took place in St. Petersburg. This year, the event drew over 200 participants who discussed the most topical issues concerning the introduction and development of the IPv6 protocol, information security, and the development of new approaches to creating innovative modern services.

The conference participants pointed out that IPv6 has very good prospects for further development. The rapid development of the Internet of Things can serve as an additional impetus for IPv6’s introduction and expansion. Even today, the introduction of the IPv6 protocol is going considerably quickly in Russia: almost all major .RU domain zone operators support IPv6, with their numbers increasing each month.

Maxim Burtikov, External Relations Officer for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at RIPE NCC, said that today Russia has 51 "five-star" local Internet registries (LIR), and 27 of them provide content through IPv6, while the others provide Internet access for their clients through IPv6. In addition, over 50 percent of all autonomous systems in Russia claim to use IPv6. Information security is becoming a more and more topical issue, and the IPv6 protocol is extremely useful to ensure it, he said.

Each year, Russian IPv6 Day attracts more and more participants and has become one of the most popular platforms of heads and experts of the domestic telecommunications industry to meet and exchange opinions.
