The number of registered names in .IN has exceeded 2 million

IN Registry that manages India’s ccTLD .IN has started to publish registration statistics on their official webpage. According to the data as of last evening there were more than 2 million names registered in the Indian domain. It’s 2,072,205 to be exact. However, it’s not that simple to count them because of the peculiarities of Indian counting system. The problem is that there is no such concept as a million per se in India. Indians use the quantity called “lakh”, which equals 100 thousand and “tens of lakhs”, which correspondingly equals millions. This is why on the Indian webpage the number mentioned before is shown as 20 72 205.

Anyway, we can conclude that India, which follows China by the number of citizens, is still lagging behind by the number of registered domain names and the “domain boom” hasn’t reached it yet. Indian domain is not even among the first ten among ccTLDs. “The pass mark” to the first ten is 2.9 million registered names.
