EURid registry that manages pan-European domain .EU, reported that the preparation period for the launch of the Cyrillic version of the domain is almost over. According to EURid, the domain will be launched on June 1. Since that moment the registry will fully enforce the basic rule according to which the second level script has to match the top-level script. This means that Cyrillic domains earlier registered in .EU will be transferred to its Cyrillic version - .ЕЮ. They will be fully subject to all rules, regulations and services of the registry, same as for .EU now.
Noting the importance of this step, we have to admit that for an average user, at least for Russian speakers, domain name .ЕЮ looks quite strange and doesn’t carry any connotations neither with Europe, not with European Union.
